Earth observation services

The Midi-Pyrenees observatory is currently participating in 43 European or international scale observation services, which are either in situ observation platforms deployed beyond our frontiers, or embedded platforms on aircraft, ships or space launchers:

Europe

Participation in ICOS Integrated Carbon Observation system via the OSR Regional. Space Laboratories Laboratories involved CESBIO, LA. Field: Atmosphere. [1] [2]

Participation in EPOS European Plate Observatory system via RESIF French Seismological and Geodesic Network, ReNaSSNational Seismic Monitoring Network, RLBP Permanent wide band network and RAP Permanent Accelerometric Network; Another contribution to EPOS is the BGI International Gravimetric Bureau hosted by the OMP. Laboratories involved IRAP, GET. Fields: Internal Earth (geodesics, gravimetry, seismology). [1]

Responsibility for IAGOS In-service Aircraft for a global observing system. Laboratory involved: LA. Field: Atmosphere. [1] [2] [3]

Participation in the CLUSTER space mission (ESA, NASA) on thestudy of interactions between the solar wind and the terrestrial magnetosphere: responsibility for the CIFI on spectrometry instrument and contribution to the STAFF instrument Measurement of magnetic fluctuations and spatio-temporal analysis of the fluctuations electric and magnetic fields. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Field: Astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the EUCLID space mission (ESA, NASA) on mapping dark energy: Preparation of analytical methods and data processing. Launch scheduled for 2020. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Field: Astrophysics, astronomy. [1]

Participation ATHENA space mission (ESA) Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics. Design of several embedded instruments. Launch scheduled for 2028. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: Astrophysics, astronomy. [1]

Participation in the MARS EXPRESS (ESA) space mission (ESA) Observation of the planet Mars: building the ASPERA instrument Analyser of Space Plasmas and EneRgetic Atoms. Launch scheduled for 2003. Mission scheduled for completion in 2016. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: Astrophysics, astronomy. [1]

Participation in the ROSETTA mission (ESA) Study of the comet Churyumov Gerasimenko: building the ROSINA instruments Spectrometer neutral and ionized gas, CONSERTComet Nucleus Sounding Experiment by Radiowave Transmission and APXSAlpha X-ray Spectrometer. Launch scheduled for 2014. Mission scheduled for completion in 2015. Continued exploitation of the data collected. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the EXOMARS mission (ESA, ROKOSMOS) Detecting any traces of a form of life Mars: supplying an electronic module. Launch scheduled for 2018. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Field: astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the JUICE mission (ESA, NASA) JUpiter ICy moon Explorer: supply of MCP MicroChannel Plate and CEPAGE ChargEd Particle Analyzers for Galilean Environments instruments. Launch scheduled for 2022. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the SOLAR ORBITER mission (ESA) Observation of the Sun: supply of the PAS Proton/Alfa Sensor instrument. Launch scheduled for 2018. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the CTA Cherenkov Telescope Array: production of a Camera photomultiplier and aSciences Tools set. Preparatory phase up to 2017. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the PLANCK mission Study of the cosmological diffuse background: construction of the HIFI A High Frequency Instrument. Launch scheduled for 2009. Mission scheduled for completion in 2014. Continued exploitation of the data. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Responsibility for the OV-GSO Virtual Observatory of the Great South West (of France) which manages the data collected by several of the NASA space missions of the ESA (CDPP, XMM-Newton, STORMS). Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Responsibility for the CDPP French national data centre for natural plasmas of the solar system (ESA) which distributes the data from several ESA missions (Solar Orbiter, JUICE, ATHENA). The CDPP participates in the OV-GSO. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Responsibility for STORMS Solar Terrestrial ObseRvations and Modeling Service (ESA, NASA) which distributes data from several ESA and NASA missions. STORMS participates in the OV-GSO. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Africa

Participation in AMMA-CATCH Analyse Multidisciplinary Analysis of the African Monsoon. Laboratory involved: GET. Fields: climatology, hydrology, ecology. Fields of study: Benin, Mali, Burkina. [1] [4]

Responsibility for HYBAM Geodynamical, hydrological and biogeochemical control of erosion/alteration and material transport in the Amazon basin. Laboratory involved: GET. Fields: hydrology, biogeochemistry, geology. Field of study: river Congo basin. [1] [4]

Responsibility for BVET Experimental Tropical Drainage Basins. Laboratory involved: GET. Fields: hydrology, biogeochemistry, geology. Field of study: Cameroon. [1] [4]

Participation in ROFA Observatories Network of River hydrosystems in Africa. Laboratory involved: EcoLab. Fields: ecology, hydrology. Fields of study: Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal.

Responsibility for O'MAFE Mauritian - French Observatory of the Environment. Laboratory involved: EcoLab. Fields: ecology, hydrology. Field of study: Mauritius.

Responsibility for O'MILO Milo Observatory in Kankan. Laboratory involved: EcoLab. Fields: ecology, hydrology. Field of study: Guinea.

Responsibility for O'TOGO Lake Togo Observatory. Laboratory involved: EcoLab. Fields: ecology, hydrology. Field of study: Togo.

Responsibility for TENSIFT Tensift observatory. Laboratory involved: CESBIO. Fields: hydrology, remote sensing. Field of study: Tensift drainage basin, Morocco. [4]

Responsibility for INDAAF International Network to study Deposition and Atmospheric chemistry in AFrica. Laboratory involved: LA. Field: Atmosphere chemistry. Field of study: Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Benin, Cameroon, South Africa, Tunisia. [1] [4]

North America

Participation in the Cassini-Huyghens mission (NASA, ESA, ASI) Explorer Saturn and Titan explorer: construction of the CAPS instrument Cassini Plasma Spectrometer, the MIMI instrumentA Magnetospheric Imaging Instrument, the RWPS instrumentA Radio and Plasma Wave Science, and the UVIS instrument A Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph. Launch scheduled for 1997. Mission scheduled for completion in 2017. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the MMS mission (NASA) Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission: supply, characterisation and calibration of the set of 32 pairs of detectors (micro-channel plates) for the ion measurement experiment, part of the FPI Fast Plasma Investigation consortium. Launch scheduled for 2015. Mission scheduled for completion in 2017. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the MSL (NASA) Mars Science Laboratorymission: construction and operation of the CHEMCAM instrument A CHEMistry CAMera for the NASA Mars Science Laboratory, embedded on the Martian rover Curiosity. Launch: 2011. In operation since then. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the MARS 2020 mission (NASA): construction of the SUPERCAM instrument A remote-sensing instrument for the NASA Mars 2020 mission. Launch scheduled for 2020. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the CFHT Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope [2] : construction of the SPIROU instrument A near-infrared spectropolarimeter and a high-precision velocimeter. Installation in Hawaii scheduled for 2017-2018. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the SuperDARN Super Dual Auroral Radar Network: responsibility for the Kerguelen radar since 2013. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Fields: astronomy, astrophysics. [1]

South America

Participation in the SVOM space mission (CNES, Chinese space agency) Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor for the development of a robotic telescope to study the gamma ray bursts at the San Pedro Martir national astronomical observatory, Mexico. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Field: astrophysics. [1]

Participation in the VLT (ESO) Very Large Telescope (of the European Southern Observatory) erected in Chile in 2016: construction of the  MUSE A Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer instrument. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Field: astrophysics. [1]

Asia

Responsibility for  BVET Experimental Tropical Drainage Basins. Laboratory involved: GET. Fields: hydrology, biogeochemistry, geology. Field of study: India. [1] [4]

Responsibility for AMBHAS Assimilation of Multi satellite data at Berambadi watershed for Hydrology And land Surface experiment. Laboratory involved: GET. Fields: hydrology, remote sensing. Field of study: India.

Participation in the BEPI-COLOMBO mission (ESA, JAXA): construction of two MEA electron spectrometersElectron Spectrum Analyzer to be embedded in the Japanese MMO probe Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter.Launch scheduled for 2018. Laboratory involved: IRAP. Field: astrophysics. [1]

Oceans

Participation in PIRATA-CLIVAR Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic - World Climate Research Programme's Core Project on Climate and Ocean. Laboratory involved: LEGOS. Field: operational oceanography. Field of study: Tropical Atlantic [1] [4]

Participation in SONEL-GLOSS Observation System for Long-term Variations in Sea Level - GNSS data center (Global Navigation Satellite System) for the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) program. Laboratory involved: LEGOS. Fields: meteorology, oceanology. Field of study: global ocean. [1]
