At BGI, global-scale measurements of the Earth’s gravity field and related information are collected, compiled, archived, and made available on demand, for the needs of education or research.

RAP (Réseau accélérométrique des Pyrénées)

While the seismic monitoring stations of the RSSP (Réseau de Surveillance sismique des Pyrénées) measure ground velocity, accelerometers measure ground acceleration. Acceleration is what buildings respond to: its measure is thus crucial for construction and civil engineering. Maximum acceleration expected on the base of earthquake records (instrumental seismicity), as well as historical seismicity, helps establish antiseismic regulations. OMP accelerometers are therefore installed in the heart of towns and cities, where hazards are greatest, whereas the stations of the seismic monitoring network of the Pyrenees, built for the needs of seismicity maps, are located in calm spots in order to detect the slightest earthquakes.


  • Measuring strong movements in case of major earthquakes;
  • Avoiding signal saturation: measuring magnitudes;
  • Assessing ground response;
  • Providing applications in antiseismic engineering.

RENAG (Réseau national GPS)

RENAG is a network of permanent GPS stations operated by French research laboratories, for the needs of science and Earth observation in geophysics (both inner and outer Earth) and geodesy. It is funded by INSU-CNRS and the ministry in charge of Higher Education, and supported by a number of public entities including IGN, CEA, IRSN, and CNES. Data collected are freely accessible to the public.


RSSP (Réseau de Surveillance sismique des Pyrénées)

This seismic monitoring network consists of 20 stations scattered on the French side of the Pyrenees, allowing for the real-time tracking of seismic activity throughout the massif. It is part of RéNaSS (Réseau national de Surveillance sismique). Data collected are posted in various bulletins, from regional (using data from the Catalan and Spanish monitoring services and the Laboratoire de Détection et de Géophysique at CEA), through national (RéNaSS), to international (ISC: International Seismological Centre).

Quarterly and yearly bulletins published by RSSP provide a synthesis of seismicity in the whole Pyrenean range. They are circulated to the civil preparedness services of the area, entities which provide data, as well as public services or individuals on demand. RSSP is also in charge of responding to information requests from public services in the field of civil security and preparedness. All significant earthquakes entail an alert faxed to civil preparedness services. RSSP is also a vector of education, welcoming school groups for an introduction to the seismological aspects of Pyrenean tectonics.

20 permanent stations:

  • 3 with satellite transmission via Météosat
  • 17 with telephone transmission

In addition, a number of temporary stations transmit data via Météosat or store them on site (testing of equipment in actual conditions, local studies).

Sites like Arette (ATE, Pyrénées-Atlantiques) and Saint-Jean-L’Albère (SJAF, Pyrénées-Orientales) also feature Streckeisen STS-2 broadband seismometers, part of the RéNaSS broadband network.

In addition to the standard telephone interrogation system, the station at Moulis (MLS, Ariège) is connected to OMP via a special line allowing for the continuous, real-time visualization of seismic activity.

RLBP (Réseau Large Bande permanent) / ST-SO2

ST-SO2 is a local branch of the RLBP network, under construction within the CNRS large infrastructure TGIR RESIF (Réseau sismologique et géodésique français).

It seeks to investigate the structure of the Earth and to characterize earthquakes in Metropolitan France.

The new RLBP network is currently under deployment, with broadband velocimetric (10 mHz, 100 Hz) and high-dynamics stations (140 dB). Due for completion in 2018, it should comprise 55 stations, evenly distributed across Metropolitan France, at average intervals of 100 km.


Setting up TGIR RESIF (Très Grande Infrastructure de Recherche - Réseau sismologique et géodésique français), with the funding project Equipex RESIF-CORE.

Planned assignments for 2012-2019:

1)     Modernization and maintenance of RAP (Réseau accélérométrique des Pyrénées, under the supervision of Marie Calvet)

2)     Complete renovation of RSSP – Upgrading the 20 stations from short-period to broadband: tests, renewal of all infrastructures, transfer of 3 to 5 stations to new sites, while pursuing the usual core missions of RSSP (maintenance of the network and issuing of seismicity bulletins), under the supervision of Matthieu Sylvander.

3)     Deployment of RLBP Sud-Ouest – Installing some 15 broadband stations in Southwest France (between the Pyrenees and Dordogne): seeking new sites (tests and validation), building, then maintenance.
